Arts

At Holden Park all students have access to high quality art education, which is fundamental in developing creative and visual thinkers and providing a holistic well-rounded member of society. Students are given the space, time and support from our trained and skilled staff in acquiring the skills needed to become an expert in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art techniques. Visual approach is used as it offers a unique impact to the development of the child, and allows for a wide range of media and materials to be used to enable learners to explore, build on new and old knowledge and create their own original and innovative ideas.

Our curriculum aims to:

  • promote a strong sense of aesthetic awareness
  • develop an understanding of the historical, cultural and commercial importance of art
  • develop a wide range of practical and artistic skills
  • encourage curiosity and independence

Key Stage 3

In Year 7, learners are taught the formal elements of line, tone, form, texture, colour and pattern. Students are introduced to the concept of keeping a personal sketchbook to record creative ideas and progress.

In Year 8, our learners continue to develop their understanding of the formal elements but also increase their use of media and techniques. Students begin to explore ceramics and sculpture alongside the traditional skills of painting and drawing.

The year 9, students are encouraged to work in an increasingly independent manner in preparation for the IGCSE course. Formal skills are consolidated but pupils are also encouraged to think about the role of art in society and produce personal creative responses to issues concerning the world at large.

Key Stage 4

The Cambridge 9-1 IGCSE course continues to extend the skill level of the students and introduces them to an ever-increasing repertoire of techniques. Students have the opportunity to experiment with computer generated art, glass, printmaking and textiles. Work becomes more independent as the course progresses.

Educational visits and extra -curricular activity

All students have the opportunity to take part in organised gallery visits both locally and internationally. We also welcome visiting artists into the classroom and students have the opportunity to work alongside a range of practitioner so they can extend their knowledge of the different techniques and applying new ones.

Fun STEM Fair and Art Challenge

Students will participate in speed art competition during the STEM Fair and afterwards a mini-Art exhibition will be done to show case their work.  The fair will feature activities from Science Maths, Design and Technology, and ICT.

We have a well resources Art studio. Our students have access to computers, printers, and cameras to develop their presentations.
