Primary School

Holden Park Junior and Middle School curriculum gives due regard to the British curriculum as set out by the Department for Education (DFE) which has been researched and evidenced to be successful. In view that education is cultural, Holden Pack seamlessly blends the British curriculum with the Nigerian curriculum in order to teach the Nigerian culture, content and context.

Our teachers work hard to provide each pupil with relevant learning experiences that are fun and enjoyable; that follow their interest and fosters their natural curiosity. Teaching is to the highest standards to ensure that every child is motivated, challenged and prepared for the next stage of their learning journey.

The main subjects taught are English, Mathematics, Science, French, Geography, History, Religious Studies, Social Studies, ICT, Design and Technology, Art, Drama, Music, Physical Education and Yoruba. Reasoning skills have also been introduced to the curriculum to cater for the increasing complexities of senior school entry requirements.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE & LITERACY

Throughout the school, one of our key philosophy is to ensure our pupils are able to communicate assertively when faced with diverse situations, contexts and for a range of different purposes. This is achieved In and out of our English lessons, as pupils are accorded opportunities for speaking and listening in order to help them feel confident when expressing themselves. With the support of their teachers and practitioners, our aim here at Holden Park is to inspire a lifelong love for all types of literature, and language to convey their ideas in speaking and in written work.

In Holden Park it is important to us that children learn to read, write and discuss text competently and confidently from a young age, as this forms the foundation for all aspects of English and many other subjects. Children have access to a wide variety of books, text and e-books throughout the school. As children move through the school they are introduced to increasingly challenging text, encouraging them to think critically. Children are encouraged to voice their opinions creating opportunities for them to discuss and justify their opinions, hence gaining a better understanding and enabling them to appreciate and engage with what they are reading.

By the time they come to the end of their journey in Holden Park they would have developed a lifelong love for literature, be able to express themselves confidently and competently both in reading and writing and acquired the skills set to think critically.

MATHEMATICS

At Holden Park it is important that high standards are attained in Mathematics. We aim to develop a positive attitude towards the subject through purposeful teaching using a variety of textbooks and materials. In order to ensure interest and enjoyment of the subject we relate math to the children’s everyday life and use digital technology in our classes. We aim to encourage their natural curiosity for learning, promote independence, praise persistently and support their ability to work as an individual, in a pair or group setting. We aim to ensure that our students here at Holden Park Nigeria are not only confident in Mathematics but are able to use the knowledge and skills gained as they progress through their senior schools and beyond.

By the time children come to the end of their learning journey in Holden Park they would have developed sound mathematical skills that can be used in a variety of context and importantly in the next stage of their learning journey.

SCIENCE

Holden Park recognises and values the important role Science plays in supporting our students to explore and understand the world.  Science in Holden Park is intentionally designed to arouse children’s natural curiosity. We achieve this by creating an enabling environment for learning to take place by ensuring our students enjoy specialist facilities including a well-equipped Science laboratory, extensive grounds for fieldwork, and teaching that is presented in a practical relevant way, which allows for a more systematic approach to learning and a more analytical approach to evidence based learning. There are also sufficient opportunities for children to put into practise their core Maths and English skills, as cross-curricular are linked together. We aim for pupils to leave Holden Park Nigeria with a good footing regarding Science and the ability to apply this knowledge when faced with new challenges at secondary level and beyond. By the time children come to the end of their learning journey in Holden Park they would have developed investigative, planning, predicting, measuring, data handling and evaluation skills.
